چکیده

Switch design for interconnection networks plays an important role in the overall performance of multiprocessors and computer networks. In this paper we study the impact of one parameter in the switch design space, link arbitration. We demonstrate that link arbitration can be a determining factor in the performance of current networks. Moreover, we expect increased research focus on arbitration techniques to become a trend in the future, as switch architectures evolve towards increasing the number of virtual channels and input ports. In the context of a state-of-the-art switch design we use both synthetic workload and execution driven simulations to compare several arbitration policies. Furthermore, we devise a new arbitration method, Look-Ahead arbitration. Under heavy traffic conditions the Look-Ahead policy provides significant improvements over traditional arbitration schemes without a significant increase in hardware complexity. Also, we propose a priority based policy that is capable of reducing the execution time of parallel applications. Lastly, we enhance the arbitration policies by a supplemental mechanism, virtual channel reservation, intended to alleviate the hot-spot problem.

A VLSI Crossbar Switch with Wrapped Wave Front Arbitration

Crossbar switch is a key component of communication switches used in networks. Allocation of resources has a direct impact on packet transmission. A poor allocation results in long transmission delays. Hence, switches must include an arbiter that efficiently allocates the crossbar’s resources. In this brief, a novel VLSI CMOS implementation of a high performance wrapped wave front arbitration (...

Analysis of shared-link AXI

Shared-link AXI provides decent communication performance and requires half the cost of its crossbar counterpart. The authors analysed the performance impact of the factors in a shared-link AXI system. The factors include interface buffer size, arbitration combination and task access setting (transfer mode mapping). A hybrid data locked transfer mode was also proposed to improve the performance...

Exploring the Switch Design Space in a CC-NUMA Multiprocessor Environment

The switch design for interconnection networks plays an important role in the overall performance of multiprocessors and computer networks. It is therefore crucial to study various factors in the switch design space and their influence on the system performance. In this paper we first propose a 4-D framework for the design of input queuing switches with wormhole routing and virtual channels. Th...

Decomposed Arbiters for Large Crossbars with Multi-Queue Input Buffers

Crossbars are key components of communication switches used to construct multiprocessor interconnection networks. For a fixed number of nodes, larger crossbars result in reduced probability of conflicts and allows packets to traverse the network in fewer hops. However, increasing the size of the crossbar also increases the delay of the arbiter used to resolve conflicting requests. The increased...

Learning automata-based bus arbitration for shared-medium ATM switches

Although new high-bandwidth network technologies are being introduced and widely deployed, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is still considered one of the most important network technologies currently in use. A number of ATM switch architectures have been proposed in the literature. However, industry has shown that is better to use the well-known shared-medium technique in the design of these A...
